FAQs
Will the Integrative Vision Skills Program cure my child’s reading disability (learning disability, ADD, ADHD, etc.)?
No. While there certainly are visual components to these diagnosis’, there is so much more complexity to these problems than just a visual deficit. What the Integrative Vision Skills Program will do is to build more efficient visual skills and in so doing will remove vision skill deficits acting as an interference to other skills that your child is trying to develop.
Will my child be able to stop using their glasses by working with this program?
I don’t know. Our goal is not to reduce your child’s eye glass prescription. Our goal is to build better visual skills independent of the fact that your child may be using glasses. Once the program is complete, I would advise you to have your child’s eyes examined to determine if they still have a need for eye glasses.
How will we know that we are making progress?
Every child is different so be open to seeing progress in many areas. You may notice changes in general coordination, better fluency when reading, less loss of place when reading, improved handwriting, greater willingness to read, and fewer symptoms such as headaches and eyestrain.
How long will it take to see improvements?
Here again, all children are different. Some respond very quickly and you may see changes in a few weeks and others take longer. Remember that the more consistent you are the quicker you will see improvements.
We’ve completed Module 1 and have seen tremendous changes in our child’s performance do we need to go on to Module 2?
Although you may notice many improvements with Module 1 you should continue on to Module 2 because the skills your child has developed are still new. Moving on to Module 2 will allow your child to develop their skills further, prevent regression, and increase the likelihood of your child “owning” the improvements.
We’ve completed both Modules and have had wonderful success, but we’ve only been working on improving my child’s visual skills for a few months. Can we continue working on the activities?
Absolutely yes! You can choose to extend your membership in 3 month blocks to continue working on the activities.
We have a very busy schedule and find it hard to do the activities each day. Do we really have to do them every day?
We want to stack the deck in your favor in order to give your child the best opportunity to create positive changes. Consistency is the key to this program. You should do the activities daily, however you may break them up so, as an example, you can do some work in the morning and some in the afternoon.
If my child finds some activities easy to do, should we skip working on these activites?
No. Part of the parent’s role in this program is to find the challenge level that is appropriate for your child with each activity. Add in more integrative elements to increase the challenge.
My child finds some activities really difficult and frustrating. How should we handle this?
Make the activity easier. Break the activity down into smaller parts, simplify the activity, or work on it in smaller time increments to reduce the challenge and frustration. Remember that the instruction sets are not written in stone, but are meant to guide you.
Can my child do this program on their own?
No, as your child’s parent, you are an integral part of the program. You are your child’s coach. Your job is to guide and offer feedback to your child through the program. You must work together as a team!
What’s the difference between this and an office based Vision Therapy program?
A Vision Therapy program is a customized, doctor directed program that uses optical devices including lenses and prisms. The Integrated Vision Skills program is not customized and uses none of the optical devices that are typically used in a VT program.
